Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX for Nintendo Switch is a remake of the similarly named 2005 game: Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team and Red Rescue Team in which the player is not one of the ubiquitous humans with their Pokeballs, and their training sessions and battles in gyms, as fun as those can be. Instead, in this game, as in the originals, the player finds themselves mysteriously transformed into a Pokémon and that is how they play through this game, seeing everything from a uniquely Pokémon perspective!
About the Game
You will wake up one morning and find yourself to be a Pokémon: but which Pokémon? This important question is answered with the help of a personality quiz that narrows down the options as you progress. Once your form has been set, you get to choose a companion who is a fellow Pokémon, also from the same list used to narrow down your choices (details below). The only caveat is that your companion Pokémon cannot be from the same type as your own Pokémon.
As the name implies, there are a lot of unknown dungeons to be explored. The basic premise of the game is that you and your companion are going about the countryside, rescuing fellow Pokémon who have got themselves trapped in dungeons, often because of natural disasters or harmful environments. You work to rescue them and bring them back out to safety and then move on to the next job.
As well as rescuing Pokémon, you may be asked to deliver items, or provide an escort from one place to another. For the successful completion of each job, you will be rewarded with Rescue Points which are needed in order to rank up, and a Reward of some kind.
The game is turn based and uses tiles to move, so do plan ahead a little so you are not left exposed at an awkward point where you might be under threat from enemies, or in the way, blocking your companion from moving to where they want to go.
Which Pokémon Might You Be?
There are sixteen original Pokémon that you can transform into, and your choices in the quiz will weight you towards one or another. The sixteen are: Bulbasaur, Charmander, Chikorita, Cubone, Cyndaquil, Eevee, Machop, Meowth, Mudkip, Pikachu, Psyduck, Skitty, Squirtle, Torchic, Totodile, and Treecko.
Each Pokémon knows four basic moves, and also has the ability to throw projectiles, or other items. While playing through the dungeons, be sure to keep an eye on your Pokémon’s hunger levels: you will need to find food for them which can be found in the dungeon, or packed in advance for the mission – like taking a lunchbox to school or work!
How To Find Missions?
The missions can be acquired in three different ways:
- Bulletin Board: Consult the bulletin board to see which jobs are available and what you will need to do, before packing a lunch and setting off.
- Message: The message icon will pop up offering the chance of adventure and you can choose to accept it and set off with your companion.
- Story form: With these narratives you will meet up with other Pokémon who tell you about situations where your help is needed, leading you seamlessly into becoming part of the story.
