The friendly rivalry with Capcom continues to thrive with this unexpected comeback, featuring some welcome new additions such as the essential online mode with rollback netcode (including 9-player lobbies), a hitbox viewer, and a gallery with 89 illustrations. Code Mystics, a long-time partner of SNK who recently handled the rollback netcode update for Samurai Shodown, is at the helm of this port. Available on Steam today, SNK vs. Capcom SVC Chaos will launch on PS4, Switch, and GOG tomorrow.
From the beginning of the collaboration between these two Japanese giants, history has primarily remembered the excellent Capcom vs. SNK duology. And for good reason—released late in 2005, five years after the highly praised card games on Neo Geo Pocket, the eagerly awaited versus fighting game by SNK fans didn’t quite manage to win over the audience. The issues stemmed from an art direction starkly contrasting with the vibrant colors of CvS and a gameplay feel that wasn’t entirely convincing. While it lacked in polish, SVC Chaos boasted an impressive roster, featuring rarely seen fighters like Red Arremer from Ghosts ‘n Goblins, Tessa from Red Earth, a retro version of Athena, and even a Martian from Metal Slug X. It remains to be seen if today’s community will be more forgiving.
