Why Helldivers 2 Won’t Introduce a Transmog System: Insights from the Developer

April 15, 2024

It’s not a fit…

The head of Arrowhead, the developer behind Helldivers 2, has firmly rejected the idea of implementing a transmog system into the popular PC and PlayStation 5 co-op shooter, stating: “it’s not a fit.”

Since its explosive release in February, there have been suggestions from some players for a transmog system allowing customization of armor appearance without altering their attributes. However, Johan Pilestedt, CEO of Arrowhead, responded to a user on X/Twitter, explaining that a transmog system wouldn’t align with Helldivers 2’s commitment to realism.

Pilestedt elaborated, stating, “We are not considering transmog. It doesn’t align with our vision – each equipment’s appearance reflects its unique effects. Swapping appearances would be akin to having an apple that tastes like bacon, or vice versa.”

While this decision may disappoint some players, it reflects the consistent philosophy underlying Helldivers 2. The game prioritizes visual clarity and realism, ensuring that every element functions as it appears, from weapon mechanics to enemy vulnerabilities. This commitment to authenticity has been central to the game’s emergent gameplay experiences. Introducing a transmog system could potentially undermine this clear visual communication established thus far.
