Monster Hunter Stories 2 Lands on PS4, Surprising Fans

March 12, 2024

Capcom surprises gamers by bringing Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, initially available on Nintendo Switch and PC, to an unexpected platform, choosing PS4 over the more recent PS5.

In an unforeseen move, Capcom has revealed that Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, originally launched for the Nintendo Switch and PC in 2021, will be ported to PlayStation. However, in a twist that caught many by surprise, the game is slated for release on the PS4 rather than the current-gen PS5. This decision has puzzled some, given that Monster Hunter Stories 2 was celebrated as a standout RPG in its release year, and expectations were leaning towards a next-gen console debut.

Monster Hunter Stories 2, a narrative-driven spinoff from the mainline Monster Hunter series, introduces a turn-based JRPG gameplay diverging from the franchise’s traditional action RPG mechanics. Launched following the success of Monster Hunter Rise in the same year, the game was met with positive reviews, earning recommendations for those newly introduced to the Monster Hunter universe through its more recent titles.

The announcement came during the Capcom Highlights stream on March 11, where it was disclosed that both Monster Hunter Stories 2 and a remastered version of the original Monster Hunter Stories, initially released on the 3DS, would arrive on PS4 as a bundled collection on June 14, 2024. Preorders will include a special Kamura Maiden outfit for Ena, and players with Monster Hunter Rise save data will receive extra in-game rewards. A deluxe edition offering additional content is also on the horizon.

The decision to launch on PS4 rather than PS5 has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some PS5 owners questioning the strategy. Nevertheless, a significant portion of the gaming community welcomed the news, highlighting the PS4’s continued relevance and its suitability for Monster Hunter Stories 2’s anime-style graphics. The port represents an opportunity for PS4 gamers to engage with a game likened to Pokémon but outside the Nintendo ecosystem.

In anticipation of the release, Capcom has slashed the price of Monster Hunter Stories 2 on Steam and the Nintendo Switch to $39.99, alongside a Capcom Publisher Sale on Steam running until March 21, 2024. For those looking for a fresh adventure in the wait for Monster Hunter Wilds in 2025, Monster Hunter Stories 2 presents an enticing option.
